Kobs were crowned winners of the 2017 National Sevens Championship despite a 26-7 loss to rivals Heathens in the final of the Kitaka Sevens at Legends on Saturday.
Heathens, who went into the final circuit with a slim chance of winning the overall title, did everything humanly possible on their side but had to hope for Kobs to miss the final.
Kobs, hosts of the final circuit of the year, confirmed their title defense with a sounding 27-7 win over Rhinos.
Heathens had destroyed Buffaloes 31-7 in the first semifinal to book their finals slot.
The final day of the championship started with three teams in the run for the championship and both Kobs and Heathens cruised through their group games while Buffaloes faltered against Kobs.
Buffaloes’ 12-7 loss to Kobs in the pool games put them in line to meet Heathens in the semis while the host team had a somewhat easier challenge to the final in the shape of Rhinos.
With 19 points garnered from the circuit, Kobs (110) edged second placed Heathens (109) to defend their title.
The winner was Heathens’ second at Legends having lifted the Rujumba Memorial Sevens early this season.
It was also Heathens’ third final this campaign while Kobs lost their second straight final.
The champions won two circuits and were runners up on two occasions en-route to winning the title.
