Uganda Chess Federation [UCF] has changed the venue and dates for the Uganda Chess Championship.

The long awaited event that the Garry Kasparov Chess Foundation Africa offered to sponsor was set to happen next week at Hotel Africana, but because of its new adopted format, it has been pushed forward to November 9-12, and the new venue is the Forest Cottages, Bukoto in Kampala.

Like the Tanzania Open that also gets underway next month, the Championship has been made open. It is now open to all players with a FIDE ID, both nationals and foreigners hence the new name the Uganda Open Chess Championships.

The non-nationals hoping to take part in this championship will be required to part with US$10 on arrival as registration fee.

Prizes and awards

A total sum of Shs5,500,000 has been put aside as prize money. The winner of this event in the Open section is set to pocket Shs1,500,000, while the second will march home with Shs1,000,000 and the third will get Shs750,000.

In the Ladies category, Shs750,000 shall be presented to the winner, 500,000 to the second and 250,000 to the third.

Best junior, [boy and girl] will each walk away with Shs250,000. The best senior will bag the same amount of money.

For the titles, the highest placed Ugandan in each of the categories will be declared the 2107 National Champion.
