Fide Master Haruna Nsubuga and his Uganda B teammates were not up to the task over the weekend as they succumbed to a 5-3 loss to Zimbabwe A in the Africa Online Chess League.
After convincingly beating a much stronger side in Nigeria B last weekend, Uganda B was expected to find no difficulty in dispatching a Zimbabwe A side that sat third last in the league prior the round.
That didn’t happen though as the Zimbabweans put up a spirited fight to see off the East Africans. Nsubuga, Nelson Mubiru and Shakuru Wagodo lost their games. Only team captain Paul Kafuko won both his games.
The result left Uganda B third in the table standings with 24 points.
The other two Ugandan sides Uganda A and Uganda C had walkovers. The two sides were to face Zambia teams [Zambia A and Zambia B], but with the players taking part in the ongoing Henry Chilufya Chess tourney in Zambia, they didn’t make appearance.
Uganda A remain seated at the top of the table with 36 points followed by Nigeria A who beat Nigeria B 7-1. Uganda C, meanwhile are eighth now with eighteen points.
RSA Juniors beat Namibia A 4-2 to go fifth in the table standings. Namibia B lost to Nigeria D and remained second last in the league.
