The clock is fast ticking to the most prestigious and biggest local Pool event of the year, the National Open Championship.

The pressure is on the 128 players who qualified for the finals whose eventual winner will drive home a brand new Toyota Altezza, pocket Shs5M and also smile away with a championship Pool table.

Intense pressure clouds the defending champion, Sula ‘Kawujjo’ Matovu in particular for the bold fact that no player has ever managed to defend the championship.

However, Matovu believes he will break the record by becoming the first player in history to defend the championship;

I am prepared and ready to deal with the pressure that comes with the open.

History is made and broken. I want to break the history chain.

Matovu will start his title defense against little known Ashraf Kinene.

In case Matovu goes past the first test, there could be a final before the final in round two, with Simon ‘The Computer’ Lubulwa if the latter also wins round one.

To win the open, you have to beat the best and I am in the right frame of mind to do so.

The other 7 seeded players are also good money bets to win the trophy.

Seed two Fahad Ssewankambo will battle Susuna Kiguli in round one while Humphrey Nsubuga takes on fast improving Allan Katongole and Alfred Gumikiriza will lock horns with Tonny Kasozi.

Another top seed Geoffrey Ssetumba will face Eddy Kawuuki in round one as 2015 winner Amos Ndyagumanawe faces seed 7 Dan Mubiru.

Other serious contenders are; Jonah ‘Joker’ Turigye, Ivan Kanyesigye, Wasswa Kayiiya (the record league winner with 7 titles).

There is an increment in prize monies for the top 16 players.

This will definitely reflect a rise in the level of competition will lift up the standards of the game expected at the tournament, arguably the biggest on the local pool calendar.

The qualification matches involved over 5000 players from 250 playing centers across the country.
