Egyptian Grandmaster Adly Ahmed ended the Henry Chilufya Memorial Chess tournament – the GM Norm tourney – unchallenged as he won the event with 8.5/9.

Having entered the event as the highest rated player, the Egyptian was expected to dictate proceedings and he did just that. He won all his games but one that he drew against the Russian GM Petr Kiriakov.

Adly scored 8.5 points, 1.5 ahead of second placed GM Greenfeld Alon, and 2.5 points ahead of third placed GM Gupta Abhijeet.

Kiriakov came fourth with 5 points; level with Zambian IM Mwali Chitumbo who completed the top five.

Uganda’s representatives IM Arthur Ssegwanyi and FM Harold Wanyama ended the event placed sixth [4 points] and eighth [2.5 points] respectively. To finish in that position, Ssegwanyi had to outwit among others, one of the GMs in Gupta.

The No.1 seed in the East African region also had another GM [Kiriakov] share spoils with him as the two drew in the seventh round.

Wanyama, seeded fourth in East Africa finished the tourney strongly by drawing against Kiriakov. Wanyama had suffered four successive losses but he salvaged a point for himself against the Russian GM in the final round.

IM Phiri Richmond took the seventh position with 2.5 points, IM Stanley Chumfwa came second last with the same points while IM Gilian Bwalya ended last with 2 points, two places below his start rank.
