Denis Onyango,  Mbwana Samata and Micheal Olunga have been nominated for the 2017 African Player of the Year award.

The three are the only players from the East African region that are on a 30-man initial list released by the Africa soccer governing body, Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The winner will be decided by votes from the Head Coaches/Technical Directors of the National Associations affiliated to CAF, members of the CAF Technical and Development Committee and a panel of Media Experts.

Algeria and Leicester winger, Riyad Mahrez is the reigning African Player of the year having beaten Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sadio Mané to the award.

The Awards Gala will be held on Thursday, 4 January 2018 in Accra, Ghana.
