Uganda Martyrs University (UMU), Nkozi lifted the 2017 University Football League trophy on Saturday, 25th November 2017.

The Nkozi based institution overcame Makerere University Bussiness School (MUBS) 2-0 during the final at Mandela National Stadium.

Douglas Owori and Lauben Lubega scored two first half goals for the team coached by CAF ‘A’ licensed tactician Shafiq Bisaso and budding coach Eric Kisuze.

This was a perfect revenge mission for UMU following a 4-0 loss to the same team in the 2015 final.

UMU thus claimed their first championship in the history of the 6 year old tournament that brings together universities in Uganda.

There were ugly scenes towards the end of the match as MUBS fans nearly turned violent, out of frustration on the tiding of the game.

“We prepared well throughout the tournament. We were mentally and physically ready for the final. I salute the players, coaching staff and university administration that has supported the team throughout” Bisaso told the media in the post match interview.

In the third place play off match, Nkumba University beat Gulu University to take bronze.

Individual accolades:

Nkumba University;s Fredson Gwoto finished as top scorer with 8 goals.

Charles Ayiekho Lukula of MUBS was best coach and Julius Sekyewa was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Moses Kifumba (MUBS) was the Most Valuable of Player (MVP).

The University Football League has been now played for 6 years.
