Olila High missed out on the league title in Jinja despite thumping Wanderers by 128 runs. The Soroti based school side needed some fortune to overhaul Jinja SSS total but it wasn’t meant to be.
African MVP Gertrude Chandiru (44) and Rwanda national team player Damalie Busingye (33) batted long enough to help Olila post 153 in 45 overs.
Wanderers had no answers to the bowling of Mildred Anyigo (6/5) who took a career best and captain Joyce Mary Apio (4/10) getting dismissed for 25 runs.
The win helped Olila finish second in their first season in the top flight. They managed to push Jinja SSS all the way and it’s the first time the ladies league has had to be decided on the last day.
Olila High have had a good year winning the ladies T20 league early in the year and also finishing second in the league.
With the exceptions of Gertrude Chandiru, Rachel Ntono and Damalie Busingye, the team has largely been made of local girls from Soroti like Captain Joyce Mary Apio, Mildred Anyigo and Esther Illukot who have all been impressive.
Coach Ivan Kakande has also shown he can cut it with the best local coaches with his knowledge while competing with his seniors like Habib Mugalula of Jinja SSS, Jackson Ogwang of Tornado Bee and Emmanuel Issanez of Pioneer.
With the promotion of Yusuf Nanga’s Aziz Damani powered Masaka SSS next season is going to be interesting.
