Uganda Cranes captain and Mamelodi Sundowns first choice goalkeeper Dennis Onyango was in scintillating form, guiding his club to a hard fought 1-0 victory over Maritzburg United at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Tuesday evening.

Percy Tau scored the lone goal on the night to go five points clear.

Onyango was at his very best throughout the match. As early as the first quarter mark, the burly shot stopper parried the ball off Lebohang Maboe on the left post.

The Brazilians got close towards the end of the first half when Hlompho Kekana’s long range shot was saved by Ghanaian goalkeeper Richard Ofori as the opening 45 minutes ended goal-less.

On 50 minutes, Onyango was at his best, denying Zimbabwe ace Evans Rusike who had successfully intercepted Tebogo Langerman’s back pass.

Mamelodi Sundowns took the lead on 64th minutes when Tau beat Ofori with a powerful shot.

Onyango was eventually beaten by Rusike in the 85th minute but the assistant referee’s flag had been raised for off side.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Onyango will now turn the guns to Bloemfontein Celtics this Saturday at the Loftus Versfeld stadium before Tuesday’s other home game against Cape Town City.

The game with Cape Town City will be the final game for the Brazilians this year.
