Wayland Baptist University Pioneers overcame a 13-point deficit to defeat Central Christian College 78-70 in Sooner Athletic Conference on Saturday night.
Ugandan center Samuel Kalwanyi turned in a stellar performance for the Pioneers (14-4, 7-3), scoring game high 22 points on a 9-for-11 shooting and picked 11 rebounds.
And Wayland head coach Ty Harrelson was full of praise Kalwanyi who days earlier was scoreless in the 79-70 loss to Oklahoma City University.
“Sammy played a fantastic game. He was really tough today,” said Harrelson.
The win kept Wayland tied atop the SAC standings with University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (16-3, 7-3) who beat Bacone 109-97 on Saturday, and defending national champion Texas Wesleyan (13-6, 7-3) who were 95-81 victors over Southwestern Christian.
The Pioneers return to action on Thursday night to take on Southwestern Christian University (10-9, 4-6) at the Hutcherson Center.
Wayland lost to Southwestern Christian 87-73 in Bethany, Oklahoma last December.
