Brandon Sebirumbi will be part of the Silverbacks that will play at the first phase of the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualifiers.

Silverbacks head coach Mandy Juruni confirmed the power forward who has been playing for Japanese side Aomori Wat’s is one of the foreign based players on the team.

“We are looking at five (foreign based) players and Sebirumbi is one of them. We think he is in shape because he has been playing in Japan,” Juruni said.

Sebirumbi last played for the national team at the 2015 FIBA Afrobasket where he was one of the top performers for the Silverbacks averaging 8 points and as many rebounds.

Guards Samuel Mukooza and Josh Johnson who were part the 2015 team are also expected in the country next week to join the group.

“We are choosing these players according to what they can do now not what they did in the past. We will assess them when they come here next week.”

Meanwhile, Juruni also confirmed that Brian Mukasa was not registered for the first phase but along with college players as Samuel Kalwanyi will be available for the second phase of the qualifiers.

Uganda need to finish among the top three in the group that has Mali, Nigeria and Rwanda to make the final second round of the qualifiers.

Foreign Based Players Expected: Brandon Sebirumbi, Stanley Ocitti, Robinson Odoch Opong, Josh Johnson, Samuel Mukoza
