Pienaar, 35, who also captained the national team until 2012 has officially announced his retirement from football after he posted the development in a video, via his official Twitter handle.

Today I am announcing my retirement from football,” Pienaar said. “I want to say thanks to my mum and my family and all the clubs that I have played for and the supporters.

Thanks for the love throughout my career. Follow me on social media, there is an announcement coming up soon.

The South Africa international joined Everton in 2007, after spells with Ajax and Borussia Dortmund, initially signing on loan for one season before making the move permanent.

He made over 150 appearances for the Toffees during two separate stints at the club, either side of a £3m move to Tottenham, where injuries limited his first-team opportunities.

Pienaar’s final year in England saw him relegated from the Premier League with Sunderland at the end of the 2017 season, before leaving to join South African side Bidvest Wits.

Between 2002 and 2012, he played 61 international matches for South Africa national football team, scoring just three goals.
