Former African Champions Mamelodi Sundowns Mamelodi Sundowns are already in Kigali, Rwanda ahead of their CAF Champions League showdown against Rayon Sport.

The two sides face off in the first leg of the first round at the Amahoro stadium on Wednesday targeting a decent result before the return leg in a week’s time.

Uganda and Africa’s number one Denis Masinde Onyango is part of the 23-man squad from which Coach Pitso Mosimane intends to pick the team.

The Ugandan international sat out the 3-1 win over Amazulu on Saturday that keeps the Brazilians top of the PSL log, four points better than second placed Orlando Pirates, of former Uganda Cranes coach Mulitin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic.

Rayon Sport, home to Onyango’s compatriot Yasin Mugume eliminated Burundi’s LLB in the previous stage while Sundowns was never involved at the round.

The winner over two legs qualifies for the lucrative group stages from where the winner will pocket US$2.5 million while first runners-up will walk away with a sum of US$1.25 million.

Semi-finalists will awarded US$875,000 with the last of eight round finishers will settle for a prize of US$650,000.

Sundowns won the competition in 2016, the same year Onyango was crowned Africa’s Best Player – Based on the continent.

Rayon Sport has never played in the group stages of the competition.

Elsewhere, Godfrey Walusimbi’s Gor Mahia host former African champions, Esperance at Kenyatta International stadium, Machakos, Ivan Ntege’s Township Rollers are away to Young Africans with return legs set in seven days’ time.
