The 2018 Uganda Muslim Education Association (UMEA) Solidarity games tournament has witnessed a colorful opening ceremony before hundreds of people at the Mbale Municipal Stadium on Friday afternoon.

His Highness the Umukuka Enzu Ya BaMasaba, Bob Mushokori witnessed the official opening of the games that bring together schools with a Muslim founded background.

The Umukuka appreciated all the efforts of UMEA games organizing committee, participating schools, players, sponsors and partners.

“These games are here to unite us, promote talent identification. I thank the effort of the local organizing committee for the UMEA games,” the Umukuka said in his opening remarks.

Hajji Twahil Kiteezala, the chairperson of the UMEA Games organizing saluted the schools participating for making the best ever attendance at the games.

“Over the years, the UMEA games have grown for the better. There are more schools taking part and more games being competed in. We thank the parents, schools, organizing team, sponsors and everyone whose effort cannot go unnoticed for the prosperity of these games,” Hajji Kiteezaala remarked.

Head teacher of the host school, Nkoma S.S, Hajji Yakoub Mwesigwa lauded the Government of Uganda, which is running the school with an enrollment of 6,557 students.

Hajji Mwesigwa also thanked the staff of the Nkoma S.S, the UMEA games organizing committee, the Mbale community, IUIU, Tropical Bank, management of Mbale Municipal Stadium, Maluku sports ground, Aga Khan and the Police field.

The opening day was also graced by His Eminence the District Khadi of Bugisu Region Hajji Ahmed Isa Masaba, Chairperson Uganda Muslim Teachers Association, Chairman Board of Governors, Nkoma S.S, Chairman PTA Nkoma S.S and various head teachers of the participating schools.

The 2018 games are slated for the Easter weekend (30th March to 2nd April 2018) at Nkoma School, Mbale. Schools shall compete in Football (girls and boys), Netball (girls), volleyball (boys and girls), Table Tennis (Girls and boys) as well as Badminton (Boys and girls).

In the opening football match, defending champions Kasawo S.S started on a strong note winning 9-1 against Kinawa High. Valentino Opendi scored six times to shoot above the rest of the scorers in the tournament on match day one. Phillip Angello Tabu, Hassan Muhammed and Marvin Ekonde were the other scorers.

A total of 41 schools have already confirmed participation for the four day’s championship that will be hosted at Nkoma Secondary school, Mbale District.

The games will resume on Saturday, Sunday and the closing ceremony will be held on Monday, 2nd April 2018.
