Wanderers start their 2018 campaign in Jinja where they will face Avengers who got promoted to Division 2 after Kampala Pirates decided against the privilege of the Division 3 winners.
Wanderers – the second oldest cricket side – are playing in the second tier of the Uganda cricket for the second season and they are determined to make for lost time.
Wanderers finished fourth behind eventual champions Premier, runner up Strikers and ACC but they made it so hard for themselves to vie for promotion after losing 4 games out of 6 in the first round. Only a strong finish in the second round saved them from embarrassment of relegation to Divison 3.
Wanderers was supposed to start their campaign last weekend against Nile in Budo but the latter didn’t show up and game never happened. They will now travel to Jinja on a ground familiar to the Mwiri contingent in the team.
The Jinja SSS oval has been a good hunting with Wanderers being on the winning side every time they have played in Jinja. However, Avengers pose a new kind of challenge for Wanderers.
Wanderers captain Denis Musali will hope his new guns Abu Sseguya, Juma Gabula and Joseph Byaruhanga start firing immediately in a game that his side needs to win to show their intent this season.
In the other Division 2 games, Nile takes on a wounded SKLPS in Entebbe. Nile was a no show last Sunday against Wanderers and it remains to be seen whether they will appear on Sunday.
In Buddo, a bouyant Tornado will take on a new look Partidar. Partidar had a beaten season in Division 1 last year and they will be hoping the past remains where it belongs. They have recruited most of the match winners that helped Premier win the Division 2 especially the dangerous Prakash Shah. He picked 7 wickets against the same team last season deeming Tornado to being bowled out for only 24 the lowest total of the entire season.
However, Brian Adriko and his young brigade are coming off a resounding 153 runs win over new comers Budo and they will feel they can take some or everything from this game.
