For now, Nyamityobora Football Club owns the official bragging rights of Mbarara.

The newly promoted side recovered from a goal down to overcome fierce rivals Mbarara City 2-1 on a neutral Muteesa II Wankulukuku stadium on Wednesday.

Mbarara City, the presumed visitors on the day took the lead towards the stroke of half time through Hilary Mukundane’s powerful header off Paul Mucureezi’s free-kick on the right.

Second half substitutes Charles Musiige and Joseph Akandwanaho netted two goals that witnessed the Banyakare make a remarkable come-back.

Earlier in the opening half, Mbarara City expressed the urge to break the dead-lock with Ibrahim Orit’s weak header off Paul Mucureezi’s cross.

Nyamityobora reacted with a chance of their own when forward Patrick Gonahasa had a shot off target from the edge of the goal area.

Mbarara City was forced into an early change through midfielder Ivan Eyam who limped out for Steven Kabuye.

FIFA Referee Brian Miiro Nsubuga cautioned Lameck Ebong in the 27th minute.

John Kisakye limped out and his place was taken by Joseph Akandanahwo, barely four minutes to the end of the half for Nyamityobora’s first change of the game.

Towards the end of the opening 45 minutes, defender Hilary Mukundane lit up the Wankulukuku stadium with a header past goalkeeper Hilary Jomi off Mucureezi’s free-kick.

As the second half returned, Nyamityobora made a change.

In came Charles Musiige for Derrick Kiggundu, to add more fire power up front.

Mucureezi got cautioned in the 57th minute for unsporting conduct.

Eight minutes later, defender Asuman Alishe Kihogo replaced Umaru Munihizi, a tactical change that pushed Alishe as the second defensive midfielder alongside Pistis Barenge to tighten the midfield department.

Nyamitybora’s other change on the day witnessed Charles Ssebutinde coming in for the already booked Lameck Ebong.

The two Nyamitybora substitutes Akandanahwo and Musiige combined for their team’s opening goal.

Akandanahwo crossed off the left flank and Musiige was well stationed on to tap home the equalizer at the near post of goalkeeper Ali Kimera for the equalizer.

Moments later, Mbarara City had a chance to score their second goal but forward Karim Ndugwa hesitated to shoot but lay the ball in Mucureezi’s path.

Mucureezi’s attempt was cleared off the line by Uganda U-20 left back Alex Komakech.

With the last quarter an hour of the game, Mbarara City made the final change on the evening.

Barenge created room and space for the stylish left footer Bassey Marco Methodious.

Bassey had a blocked free-kick 20 yards away as the minutes ticked away.

With virtually the last kick of the game, Akandanahwo saved the best effort for last, beating goalie Kimera from an acute angle for the winning goal well celebrated.

Three points in the pouch, their first victory in the opening four matches, against a bitter rival.

Nyamityobora ascended to 14th on the log, above 16-time record league champions SC Villa and Maroons.

Charles Livingstone Mbabazi’s Mbarara City remains 7th with 6 points.
