The motorsport world woke up to bad news of the passing of rally legend Charles Muhangi.

Muhangi died Thursday morning at his home in Buziga, a suburb in the capital Kampala.

Muhangi made his debut in local rally in the mid 1990s.

He has a blossoming career that saw him win the national rally championship in 1998. He would go on to win the African Rally championship the following year.

He is the only black African to have won the continental crown.

He made a brief return to rallying in 2012.

Muhangi has also been a prominent businessman.

He has for a several years been involved in a legal battle over ownership of prime properties within the city.
