KCCA coach Mike Mutebi was full of praise for his youngsters after the team’s 2-1 win away to Tanzania’s Mtibwa Sugar in the Caf Confederation Cup.
The win, KCCA’s first since Herman Wasswa and Tony Odur goals sunk El Merriekh in Khartoum in 2014 saw the Ugandan side advance 5-1 on aggregate.
“All the players played well and they died a little for the badge,” Mutebi told the club website. “You would see determination from them and am happy for the display,” he added.
The gaffer who offered Steven Sserwadda a starting role as well as defender Eric Ssenjobe and later introduced Herbert Achai thanked the teenage trio for the display.
“You would see they had hunger and were unfazed about the big stage,” he started. “Teenager Sserwadda was fearlessly taking on opponents and defending when we lost possession. Ssenjobe and Achai were good too,” he went on.
Back in 2017, Mutebi handed a debut to now team star Allan Okello against then African Champions Mamelodi Sundowns and the rest is history.
“They have picked a leaf from Okello who also was handed a debut at a similar stage against Mamelodi Sundowns away in South Africa in CAF Champions League.
KCCA will now wait for the play off draw in which they will be paired with a side that has been eliminated from the Caf Champions League at the first round stage.
