Juma Balinya has had a great run in the league this season and arguably the most valuable player.

Despite not being an outright striker, Balinya has been the main source of goals at Police FC and currently leads the scoring charts with 19 goals.

Six goals ahead of the chasing park of Joel Madondo and Bashir Mutanda, the midfielder seems to have both hands on the top scorer’s gong with just four games to the climax of the season.

If he wins the golden boot, Balinya will become the fifth player from Police Football Club to get his name on the coveted award.

Kawowo Sports’ Joel Muyita looks at Police FC players that have been league top scorers in the past.

Denis Obua (RIP)

He played for Coffee but spent most of his career with Police FC and also had a short spell with Maroons FC, Luo Union FC of Kenya and SC Villa.

Obua was a fine dribbler and scorer of goals. He was league top scorer in 1977 scoring 24 goals.

That season, Police FC scored only 30 league goals, 24 scored by Obua.

The Cops finished the season in 9th place.

Obua played for Uganda Cranes for 14 years, served as FUFA boss from 1998-2005 and also as CECAFA Chief from 2004-2008.

Martin Muwanga

He finished joint top scorer alongside Geoffrey Sserunkuma in 2005 as Police FC won their first and last league title.

Muwanga formed a deadly partnership with Geoffrey Massa scoring eight goals to guide the Cops to winning the championship.

The 2005 league was unique in the sense that it was played in group format.

Daniel Walusimbi

Whereas Police FC failed to reclaim the league title in 2006, the top scorers gong returned to them yet again this time with Dan Walusimbi emerging as top scorer.

Walusimbi ended the 2006 campaign with 15 goals.

Peter Ssenyonjo

Not so many players in recent times can afford to hit the 20 goal mark in the Uganda Premier League.

However, the former Police FC striker scored 22 goals and emerged the top scorer during the 2008/9 season.

Will Juma Balinya become the fifth player from Police FC to win the top scorers boot?
