
Three teams that are; Uganda, Nigeria and Angola still stand a chance of advancing to the semifinals of the ongoing U17 Africa Cup of Nations from group A.
Hosts Tanzania cannot progress after losing their second game to Uganda on Wednesday. They had lost their opening games to Nigeria.
It should be noted that the top two teams of each group advance to the semifinals and qualify for the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Below is a breakdown of what is considered in case the three teams have the same points after the final group games.
For instance, if Uganda and Angola win against Nigeria and Tanzania respectively on Saturday, all the three teams will be tied on six points.
Teams are ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss), and if tied on points, the following tiebreaking criteria are applied, in the order given, to determine the rankings (Regulations Article 72).
Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams
The first criteria followed to separate the teams tied is head to head. This will consider how teams in context performed when they faced off.
Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams
In case, the teams are still tied on head-to-head in terms of points, goal difference is the next tiebreaker considered.
This takes into account the number of goals a team scored and those conceded.
Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams
This will be the third option in case the aforementioned two still don’t separate the teams. Goals scored among the teams tied will come in.
If more than two teams are tied, and after applying all head-to-head criteria above, a subset of teams are still tied, all head-to-head criteria above are reapplied exclusively to this subset of teams;
- Goal difference in all group matches
- Goals scored in all group matches
- Drawing of lots.
