• Afro-Varsity 3×3 Basketball Championship Finals
  • Men: ISEG 13-14 UCU Canons
  • Women: ISEG 8-13 UCU Lady Canons

Uganda Christian University registered success at the 2019 Afro-Varsity Basketball Championship after emerging winners both in the men’s and women’s category.

The Canons (men’s team) and Lady Canons (women’s team) proved dominant in the two-day championship held at United States International University (USIU) in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Mukono-based outfit defeated Institut Supérieur d’Entrepreneurship et de Gestion (ISEG) from Senegal in the finals (men and women) played on Sunday.

In the men’s final, UCU Canons edged ISEG winning a closely contested affair 14-13. They had eliminated hosts USIU in the semifinals with a 14-11 win.

The team coached by Nicholas Natuhereza had earlier swept aside their opponents in the group stages. UCU Canons were in pool A alongside Makerere University, the University of Johannesburg and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

The players on the UCU Canons team included Isaiah Mabeny Ater, David Deng Kongor, Caesar Adoke and Titus Lua.

In the ladies categories, UCU Lady Canons defeated ISEG in the final winning 13-8.

Just like the men’s team, the Lady Canons also beat up all their opponents in the group before overcoming the University of Nairobi in the semifinals.

UCU was in group A alongside hosts USIU, KISII (Kenya), Tech (Kenya) and UNIDAF from Senegal.

The four players that led the Lady Canons to success included Maimuna Nabbosa, Rose Akon, Brenda Kayaga and Sarah Ageno.

This, therefore, meant that UCU alongside losing finalists ISEG qualified to the FISU University World Cup that will take place from 31st October to 1st November 2019 at Huaqiao University, in Xiamen (China).

This is the second time that UCU Lady Canons qualify for the World Cup after their maiden appearance in 2017.
