- Wakiso Giants FC 2-1 Entebbe FC
Wakiso Giants Football Club has officially become the first team to earn promotion to the 2019-20 Uganda Premier League from the second division (FUFA Big League).
This comes after the Purple Sharks’ hard fought 2-1 win against Entebbe FC in the game played at Kyabazinga stadium on Thursday.
Norman Ogik and Ivan Kiweewa scored a goal each to guide Wakiso Giants to victory and ultimately promotion to the top tier league.
John Wesley Kisakye scored for Entebbe FC in the first half but this turned out to be a consolation goal for the visitors who also got relegated.
The opening stages of the game saw an evenly contested affair with either side opting for a cautious approach.
The first attempt came in the third minute when diminutive playmaker Ivan Kiweewa teed up Ogik who went through on goal but failed to find the target.
The visitors grew in confidence and started marching Wakiso Giants but lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
Ogik opened the scores two minutes after the half-hour mark thanks to Kiweewa who released him.
Kiweewa won possession from Kisakye and lobbed the ball past Entebbe FC defenders to find Ogik who fired into the right corner of the net to send fans into wild jubilations.
Kisakye however, restored parity heading home in the 42nd minute and the two teams went for the mandatory break leveled.
Upon resumption, Wakiso Giants head coach Ibrahim Kirya called for double substitution introducing Hakim Ssenkumba and Geoffrey Luutu for Richard Kigozi and Abdukarim Kasule respectively.
There was an instant impact from the changes first with Ssenkumba making an attempt four minutes after coming on but he was unlucky with his effort going just wide.
Ogik thought he had regained the lead for the Purple Sharks in the 52nd minute when he headed home Ramathan Muwadda’s cross but referee Brian Miiro Nsubuga called for an offside.
It was Kiweewa who scored the second for the home side capitalizing on a mistake by defender Felix Kaweesa when he failed to clear James Kasibante’s cross hence gifting the ball to Kiweewa.
Midway through the second half, Entebbe FC coach James Odoch also made changes bringing on Fahad Nsubuga, Murushid Bukenya and Philly Lutaaya for Andrew Ssekayombya, Joshua Arinaitwe Kazoora, and Felix Kaweesa in that order.
The final change for Wakiso Giants saw skipper Ali Feni paving way for Isaac Ntege in the 65th minute.
Maximum points mean Wakiso Giants moved to 40 points in Elgon group with one game to play (away to Doves AllStars).
Entebbe FC remains second from bottom on 16 points and officially got relegated with one game to play.
