Ndejje University’s stay in the top tier league officially ended on Thursday after falling to Onduparaka FC in their penultimate game this season.

Viane Ssekajugo’s late goal ensured the Lions suffered the drop with a game to play hence joining Nyamityobora FC and Paidha Black Angels who got relegated already.

This, therefore, means that all the three teams that got promoted at the start of the 2018/19 season fall back to the FUFA Big League in the same campaign.

Kawowo Sports takes you into the history books to bring you the last time when teams that got promoted eventually dropped back to the lower division in the same season.

It has taken ten years for such a rare incident to happen, with the last time when all the new teams got relegated coming in 2009 during the 2008/2009 season.

Prior to the start of the season, five teams had earned promotion to the top tier league, then called the Uganda Super League. These included; Mbarara United, Bugerere FC, Youfra FC, Sharing FC and Kakira FC.

Back then, the league had a total of 18 teams and five would get relegated at the end of the season. It should also be noted that back then, promotion to the top division was done on a regional basis where different teams from the different regions of Uganda would compete before a Supermini League was played to determine the winner who would then qualify.

Therefore, the aforementioned teams all represented different regions as follows; Mbarara United FC – Western, Bugerere FC – Buganda, Youfra FC – Northern, Sharing FC – Kampala, Kakira FC – Eastern.

Mbarara United FC

One of the teams that were part of the inaugural National League in 1968, Mbarara United FC failed to maintain their stay in the top division for a long time. Between 1968 and 2003, they had featured in the league in only seven campaigns and their return in 2008 did not last long as well finishing in 14th position on 35 points.

To qualify to the Uganda Super League in 2008, Mbarara United had defeated Kasese Young in the regional mini-league.

Bugerere FC

The team had a humble beginning in 1998 then called Kayunga Police FC but decided to change the name to Bugerere FC in 2004.

In 2008, Bugerere surprised everyone when they won promotion to the top division under the guidance of coach Badru Kaddu. They defeated Masaka United in the regional mini finals.

Despite making a few additions to the team including the late Ausi Kaaya, Moses Okello and Jamil Maliyamungu, they failed to stay afloat. Bugerere ended the season in 15th position collecting a meagre 23 points.

Youfra FC

Started in 2004 as a leisure club competing in village tournaments in Yumbe District but the targets changed along the way and by 2008, Youfra FC was featuring in top-flight football. They stunned favourites Arua Central in the Northern Uganda regional finals to earn promotion.

However, they were a club with no proper structures, limited funds and a poor squad. Their stay lasted only for one season ending the 2008/09 season in 16th position on 19 points.

Sharing FC

A club affiliated to the Catholic Church and based in Nsambya, a suburb of Kampala, Sharing also won promotion to Uganda Super League in 2008.

They edged past Jogoo Young in the Kampala region final but there was literally no support from Church to have the team stay and hence suffered the drop finishing the season in 17th position with 17 points.

Kakira FC

Of all the teams that got promoted in 2008, Kakira FC looked the favourites to have the best run in the league but this didn’t happen. Coached by the late Timothy Ayiekoh, the team that hugely relied on players that at the same time worked at the Sugar factory failed to impress and finished bottom of the table with only 16 points.

To qualify for the Uganda Super League, Kakira had defeated Jinja Municipal Council 2-1 in the Eastern region final.
