• Gallagher Premiership Final
• Result: Exeter Chiefs 19-13 Wasps
It was never in doubt that Exeter Chiefs would seal the double on Saturday night with a Premiership Final victory, but Zach Kibirige’s Wasps put up a strong fight at Twickenham Stadium.
Chiefs won the final, 19-13, with a late Joe Simmons penalty sealing what was a thrilling match played through the rain.
It was a close contest between the two sides right from kick-off. Wasps were the first to get on the scoreboard with a penalty kicked by Jimmy Gopperth in the 12th minute. But the Chiefs responded almost immediately with a converted try by Henry Slade to make it 07-03.
Wasps would assume the lead after a beautiful try by Jacob Umaga under the uprights. However, the lead would change hands again going into the break with two penalties by Simmons. The score was 13-10 at half time.
The second half was a show of both teams’ strengths as they aimed to outsmart each other. Wasps put up strong defense against Chiefs’ pick-and-drives in the red zone, while the latter destabilised the former’s lineouts at the opposite end of the pitch.
Gopperth levelled the score just before the hour mark with a penalty which saw the momentum shift in Wasps’ favour. But Chiefs’ defense was strong enough to deny them another chance across the whitewash.
Joe Simmons scored the remaining points of the game off the kicking tee for the Chiefs to win the 2020 Gallagher Premiership Final. Slade was named Man of the Match for his brilliant performance on the night.
Chiefs thus completed the double this season having won the European Champions Cup.
