The Nile Stout Rugby Premiership defending champions Heathens started the 2021 season with a 24-19 victory over Pirates at Kyadondo on Saturday.

The sides were returning from a break due the Covid-19 pandemic that forced the previous season end prematurely.

Heathens needed four tries and two conversions to upstage the visitors while pouncing just at the right moments to take advantage of the tie.

Pirates mounted a late surge as Conrad Wanyama’s second half entry revitalized the side but it was just a little too late to overturn the game.

Mohammed Athio’s men grabbed the lead early on when Aziz Khan crashed over at right corner flag area.

Solomon Okia’s efforts propelled Pirates back into the game when he grounded the ball, Alul Stephen converting well from deep.

However, Aaron Ofoyrwoth kept the home side in control just five minutes from the break thanks Micheal Okorach’s clean run in the middle.

Paul Epillo and Ofoyrwoth’s converted tries seemed to have secured a comfortable victory for Heathens but Ivan Magomu and Sunday Jaguar’s late impressions meant a bonus point.
