  • RESULT: Hippos 24-03 Rhinos

Rhinos may have enjoyed majority possession at the Dam Waters Rugby Club, but they were unable to put points on the board for a win against Jinja Hippos on Saturday afternoon.

Jinja Hippos were efficient with ball in hand on the counterattack to clinch a 24-03 bonus point victory through tries from captain Maxwell Ebonga, Eliphaz Emong and Denis Etwau.

Three of Hippos tries scored by wingers Ebonga and Etwau were made through the backline’s expansive use of the ball across the width of the pitch.

The hosts were also able to strike their opponents on the counterattack from kick reception for Emong’s try. The back three took advantage of a poor Rhinos chase and placed “blockers” strategically to create a channel for territorial gain. Emong was in the right place at the right time to provide support and carry the ball over for a well worked team try.

After the break, Rhinos changed strategy to keeping the ball which gave them even more possession in the game. They pinned Hippos deep inside their territory but were unable to breach the defense and score points.

Joseph Bugabo who stood in for coach Martial Tchumkam said that this was due to a lack of experience in his side on the day.

“Definitely, (we missed Coach Martial). Because he has the game plan and has worked with the players closely. It is just a few errors which were up to nerves but with time, it is a young team, we expect them to do much better,” he said.

Jinja Hippos thus remain undefeated in two games played at their home ground and are fourth on the log with 10 points. Their next two games however will be trips to Kampala with an objective of maintaining this run of form.
