Football is one of the sports with one of the shortest playing spans on average but it’s also one of the most paying, especially at a professional level.
In a semipro setting as is in Uganda’s topflight league, footballers still command comparatively good pay.
The cries of many retired players (and some active ones) however point to the fact that they are not able to manage their finances during their active days in the sport.
It’s upon that background that KCCA Football Club took up the opportunity to have their players and staff take financial literacy training.
When we were approached by Chipper Cash who said they wanted to do Financial Literacy Training for our team and our players specifically, we were excited because it is a gap that we have in the sports industry.
There is a lack of financial training with these players because their trade is short-lived and they need to make use of it in the short term that they are actually playing.

The Financial Literacy Training was conducted on Thursday by Be Moner WiseR’s Carolyne Amase and the Chipper Cash Country Manager Dan Tumuramye at La Foret Resort Gardens in Muyenga.

Chipper Cash partnered with AS Roma and part of the package was to have financial literacy drills for both the unbanked and sports fraternity so we are here to fulfil part of the partnership we have with AS Roma.
We are initiating financial inclusion and literacy classes with soccer fans and players themselves. Financial discipline is not an easy thing to deal with and we saw that Chipper Cash would be the face of trying to ensure that our players have very good welfare in as far as balancing their expenses with their incomes.

Knowledge and skills to manage personal money are very important for all categories of income earners, including sportsmen and women, to be able to make the right financial decisions that would foster economic stability and Loro Mazengo echoed the importance of training.
This training is important for us as players because it is something that will help change our mentality towards financial management.

Tumuramye says Chipper Cash plans to scale the training to other sports entities in the country.
“We chose KCCA FC but we have a plan to scale to other clubs but we felt we should start with KCCA,” he said.
