The elective Association of National Olympic Committees for Africa (ANOCA) Zone V was held at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Entebbe, Uganda on Saturday, 01 May 2021.
The assembly was attended by the ANOCA president Mustapha Beraff, Uganda’s state minister of sports Denis Hamson Obua and many delegates from the ANOCA Zone V member states.
Lawyers Moses Mwase and Michael Wandera conducted the peaceful electoral process.
Ethiopia’s Dr. Weldegiorgis Ashebir beat Egyptian Engineer Elerian Sharif with a 7-3 margin for the president’s seat.
Ashebir thus took over from Uganda’s William Frederick Blick.
The vice president Hussam Hashim Khojaly from Sudan was voted in absentia albeit unopposed after failure to travel to Entebbe for the assembly because of ill health.
Hussam attended the assembly through on-line means (zoom).
For the treasurer spot, incumbent Gulam Rashid (Tanzania) lost 7-3 to South Sudan’s Dr.Deran Tong Chor Malek.
Executive Committee Members:
Burundi’s Salvator Bigirimana, Alexis Sharangabo (Rwanda) and Luul Fisshehaye (Eritrea) were voted to the executive committee.
Bigirimana tallied the most votes, 9; Sharangabo returned 8 whilst Fisshenhaye and Mohamed Abdou (Somalia) had 6 votes apiece as this called for a re-vote foe the two tied members.
In the re-vote, Fisshenhaye had 7 votes to Abdou’s 3 votes.
Kenya’s Francis Mutuku returned unopposed as Secretary General.
The assembly was also graced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members in the region; IOC Honoray members General Mounir Sabet (Egypt) and Kenya’s Keino Kipchoge with Burundian iron lady Lydia Nsekera, Paul Tergat (Kenya), Dagmawit Berhane (Ethiopia), Felicite Rwemerika (Rwanda) and the host Blick.
Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) President Donald Rukare voted on behalf of Uganda.
On the eve of the assembly, delegates held a meeting with the first lady who is also the Minister of Education and Sports Janet Kataha Museveni at Entebbe State House as well as a special meeting with the Minister of State for Sports Hon. Dennis Hamson Obua.
The ANOCA Zone 5 has member countries asUganda, Burundi, Egypt, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania as well as the horn of Africa states; Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia.
Meanwhile, ANOCA committed self to construct a state of art home for the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) with offices and some facilities.

As the outgoing chairman of ANOCA Zone V, I am humbled having served diligently. We have achieved a lot of things under my tenure as active participation for members, holding youth games in the zone, increased number of athletes to the Olympics from the zone and many more.
