For the third straight day, Ugandans in Tokyo and millions following the Olympic games on television and online witnessed another nightmare on the boxing front.

Uganda national team (Bombers) captain Musa Shadir Bwogi suffered a heartbreaking loss to Georgia’s Eskarhan Madiev on Tuesday, 27th July 2021.

This was during the Round of 16 Welterweight contest.

Three of the five judges ruled in favour of the Georgian fighter; 26-30, 26-30, and 26-30.

One judge gave victory to Bwogi 29-27 whilst another called for a stalemate 28-apiece.

Bwogi had received a bye at the Round of 32.

His raw energy levels witnessed him to a powerful start, but slowly lost the steam in the subsequent two rounds.

Earlier, Catherine Nanziri and David Ssemujju had lost their bouts on Sunday and Monday respectively.

Uganda was seeking a first boxing medal since John Mugabi won Silver at the Moscow games in 1980.

All in all, Uganda has won seven medals at the Olympics since 1956 with four of these coming in the boxing sport.

The last medal (gold) came in 2012 when Stephen Kiprotich won Gold in the 42 KM Marathon.

Meanwhile, swimmer Ambala Atuhaire will dive to the waters on Tuesday afternoon in the freestyle category.

David Isabirye is a senior staff writer for Kawowo Sports where he covers most of the major events.
