Ireland won by 39 runs

Baby Cricket Cranes showed a lot of improvement with their batting despite going down by 39 runs in their World Cup opening game against Ireland.

Uganda won the toss and elected to bowl first and as had been in the warm-up games, Juma Miyagi picked up a wicket in the first over to get Uganda going.

The Irish were able to compose themselves and put together partnerships that allowed them back into the game moving steadily at a run rate of just over four every over. Joshua Cux (111 not out) anchored the innings for the Irish even when wickets were falling around him. Cux remained an enigma for Uganda up to the end as the Irish posted a commanding 236/9.

The slow bowlers were the difference for Uganda with Matthew Musinguzi (2/35), and Joseph Baguma (2/34) leading the way while Captain Pascal Murungi chipped in with (2/44) and Juma Miyagi (2/56).

The chase didn’t start off well for Uganda with Ronald Lutaaya falling very cheaply as the Baby Cricket Cranes were in trouble at 12/2 but Isaac Ategeka (24), Brian Asaba, and later Pascal Murungi steadied the ship as Uganda chipped away at the total.

Pascal Murungi (63) led from the front forging a 53-run partnership with Joseph Baguma who took the chase past the 100 runs.

Some powerful late order hitting from Juma Miyagi (38 off 24 balls) had the Irish rattled as the Baby Cricket Cranes closed in on the requirement. However, the lack of wickets was the undoing for the Ugandans as they were all out for 197 with 11 balls to spare.

Denis has represented Uganda in international cricket events including the World Cup. He is currently the captain of Wanderers Cricket Club.
