Mali beat Mauritania 2-0 during one of the final Group F matches at the Stade Omnisport de Douala in Cameroon on Thursday night.
Massadio Haidara and Ibrahima Kone (penalty) inspired the Eagles to victory as they top group F.
France-based defender Haidara beat goalkeeper Babacar Diop after a good move by Mohamed Magassouba’s side on two minutes.
After restart of play for the final 45 minutes, Mali was awarded a penalty following a foul by Souleymane Karamoko in the goal area.
Left footed Kone made no mistake from 12 yards for his third goal of the championship (all penalties).
Mali will now take on Equatorial Guinea during the round of 16 on 26 January 2022.
Mauritania, christened as the “Lions of Chinguetti” had already been eliminated from the tournament.
In the other group F duel played at the same time, The Gambia edged 10 man Tunisia 1-0.
Ablie Jallow scored at the death of the game to secure maximum points that also guarantee them a slot at the round of 16 stage where they will play Guinea.
The championship takes a break on Friday, January 21, 2022 and the subsequent day.
