AFCON debutants The Gambia progressed to the quarterfinals after a 1-0 spirited win over Guinea 1-0 at the Kouekong Stadium in Bafoussam on Monday evening.
Musa Barrow scored the all-important goal for the side coached by Tom Saintfiet.
Barrow, a forward at Italian side Bologna struck in the 71st-minute, latching onto Yusupha Bobb’s through ball and shrugged off a challenge to slot home inside the left post.
Both countries completed this tie with a man less following second-half dismissals of Yusupha Njie and Ibrahima Conte.
Guinea’s Conte finished at the back post from Jose Kante’s low cross on the right in the 77th minute but their celebrations were abruptly halted by the offside flag.
Substitute Njie was given a second yellow card and a subsequent red card with three minutes to play.
Guinea, christened as the National Elephants had a chance through Conte striking the left upright from an acute angle on the left in stoppage time.
Moments later, Morgan Guilavogui was denied by the crossbar.
Conte was given his marching orders soon afterwards for a second bookable offence as the Scorpions held on for a famous victory.
Meanwhile, hosts Cameroons advanced to the quarter finals with a 2-1 win over 10 man Comoros.
The AFCON 2021 round of 16 continues with two matches on Tuesday, January 25, 2022.
Senegal takes on Cape Verde at 7 PM before Morocco will face Malawi.
