Kawempe Mile Race 2022
Overall winners:
- Men: Tom Dradiga – 4:33:82
- Women: Knight Achiro – 5:16:88
The first ever Kawempe Mile race was successfully held at Blend Gardens in Bwaise, Kawempe Division in Kampala city on Saturday, February 26, 2022.
Tom Dradiga and Knight Achiro were the best male and female respective runners on the day in a race whose main objective was to raise awareness for the brave fight against gender based violence and abuse in sports.


Dradiga clocked four hours, thirty-three seconds and eight two micro seconds (4:33:82) to clinch the top honours in the male gender.
Achiro on the other hand won the female race with a timing of 5:16:88.
Each of the top performers earned Shs. 1,000,000 for the hard toiled sweat.
Other top performers:
Besides Dradiga, the other top five male finishers were; Farid Wabulwa (4:34:77), Louis Niwagaba (4:35:32), Emma Otim (4:36:42) and Gilbert Kamtuhire (4:44:59).
Achiro was faster ahead of Jennipher Nyakato (5:31:74), Evas Nasasira (5:39:72), Peace Oroma (5:51:42), Claire Nabagala (6:31:14) and Mugooha Tayebwa (7:08:45).
The Kawempe Mile race was organized by Abdul Ssemujju, an athletics fanatic based in the United Kingdom with all the athletes registering for free.
Shifa Nakaweesi, an official on the local organizing committee lauded all the participants and asserted that this event shall be an annual event.
“I thank all the participants in a special way for gracing the first Kawempe Mile race. We have a message to put boldly home of fighting gender based violence in sports. We shall not rest until it is eliminated. We also want to uplift the standards of athletics in Kawempe Division. To this effect, this event shall be an annual one” Nakaweesi remarked.

Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) coach Moses Asonya oversaw the event on the technical docket.
Kawempe is a rich sporting hub that has produced some of the country’s finest footballers, boxing, netball, volleyball and rugby players.
The division is henceforth also seeking to develop middle distance and long distance runners.
