Uganda prized kickboxer Moses “Of Uganda” Golola maintained his rich vein of form in the sport over domestic opposition.
With a bandaged right knee, Golola beat up Hamza “General Fungu” Keya 2-1 on split decision 49-46, 47-48 and 50-45.
This was during a well-attended challenge K1 style fight held at the Akamwesi Gardens, Kyebando along Gayaza Road on Boxing Day (26th December 2022).
The two fighters completed the five rounds of competitive action that witnessed aggression, exchange of powerful punches, kicks, knees and clinching.
Golola, in the red corner managed to bring down his opponent more than thrice on a slippery canvas much to the applause of the ecstatic crowd.
“I promised my fans a great fight and it was. Fungu was also determined and he is a great fighter. I hit him hard on the legs to weaken him. The surface was also too slippery and I had to change my tactics and strategy. I thank all my sponsors and partners, coaches, fans, media and the management” Golola, who is sponsored by Ababet and Rock Boom Energy Drink noted.
Keya was humbled in defeat, lauding Golola whom he has always helped in sparring.
“I respect the decision of the judges. It was a great fight and I will keep fighting hard. We beat each other, it would have gone either way; to him or to me. I will seek a rematch any time It is prepared.” Keya answered back.
On the same day, it was the climax of the Uganda Boxing Champions League with week 29 action.
The main fight of the champions league (week 29) ended in controversy when fans’ favourite Isaac Zebra Ssenyange won on split points decision over Muzamir Ssemuddu.
Ssemuddu had a great show in the rings but the judges ruled otherwise, a decision that led to chaos among sections of fans.
In other bouts, Benon Balyegesa beat Mark Lukomaji 4-1 in the Junior 54 Kg cluster.
Eliphaz Mbaziira overcame Frank Maliamungu 3-2 in the youth 57 kg category.
Shafik Mawanda won by unanimous 5-0 points decision against Aron Iga in the youth 51 kg.
Ibrahim Kemis beat Bala Geko 4-1 in the youth 54 kgs.
Abdul Ssemuwemba won by unanimous decision (5-0) over Shafick Ssentamu in the Junior 57 Kg.
Felix Onen won by split decision 3-2 over Faisal Mugerere in the junior 70 kgs.
In the female youth 54 kg bout, Fatuma Nabikolo beat Jema Mukisa 4-1.
The boxing bouts were organized by Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) whilst promoter Pastor Patrick Mugambagye and pastor Enock Nabasa were in charge of the Golola-Keya fight.
