Egypt got off to a winning start, beating South Sudan 83-68, as the Zone V FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2023 Qualifiers got underway on Tuesday.

The pre-tournament favourites got out of the blocks quickly and took lead 19-14 after the first quarter of what seemed like would be a competitive game.

South Sudan, cheered on by a sizeable crowd of nationals living in Uganda, levelled the score at 23-23 midway through the second quarter and took a four-point lead through back-to-back jumpers from Yar Garang Mayen and Nyamuoch Pidor Teny.

However, Egypt found their rhythm again as flashy point guard Soraya Deghady got the offense rolling to close out the half leading 45-33.

Egypt led by as many as 21 points on Radwa Salem Ahmed Sherif’s 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter and the game was all but done as a contest.

Raneem Elgedawy easily glided to the basket and finished with a game-high 23 points to go with five rebounds. Nadine Mohammed and Soraya contributed 19 and 12 points respectively for the victors.

Adut Bulgak led South Sudan’s losing effort with a 16 points and 20 rebounds double-double. Nyamuoch Pidor (16) and Acheil Marko (13) also scored in double figures.
