For the first time of asking, the 2023 Entebbe Ladies Open lured two female professionals; Irene Nakalembe and Flavia Namakula. Nakalembe played 1-under 70 o Namakula's 3-over 74 to win the biggest share of UGX 2,000,000 cash kitty.

2023 Entebbe Ladies Golf Open:

Champion:

  • Martha Babirye (Handicap 3) – 73, 76 (149)

Martha Babirye claimed her maiden Entebbe Ladies Golf title during the 13th edition that climaxed on Saturday, 4th March 2023 at the par-71 lake side facility.

The reigning Tusker Malt Uganda Ladies Open champion Babirye has now won most domestic competitions there is to offer on the ladies’ front.

She exhibited her brilliance and mental fortitude, taking a three-shot lead from the opening round of from a field of 84 silver and bronze category golfers.

Although she was three more strokes off the day one score (76) during round two, Babirye’s supremacy had already earned her the victory.

“This is one trophy (Entebbe Ladies open) that I have been chasing in my career. I feel relieved and very excited for the victory. When I opened the lead on day one, I did not rest, I came back determined the job done and here I am as champion. I thank my playing mates for the good game and healthy competition, my sponsors led by Dorren Mwesigye, Shoeman International and others.” Babirye told the guests at the 19th hole as she picked her glittering trophy and a return air ticket to Dubai courtesy of Uganda Airlines.

Nakalembe carried the day with 1-under 70 gross score to claim the lion’s share of the UGX 2,000,000 kitty from the sponsors.

On the other hand, Namakula played 3-over 74.

“This has been a well-organized tournament especially having female professionals on board. This should be the trend for other female tournaments in the future to inspire as many budding female golfers. Personally, I am excited to have come top. This is my best score as a professional.” Nakalembe who claimed 7 titles (Entebbe Ladies open) as an amateur revealed.

A record field of 266 golfers (including subsidiaries) took part in this two-day championship that had one Kenyan female guest.

Jovia Namaara Tugume, the lady captain at Entebbe club was full of praise for the golfers and sponsors who combined resources to make the tournament eventful.

“I want to first of all thank the players for the brevity to play. I thank the Entebbe club management, Uganda Ladies Golf Union, Uganda Golf Union and all sponsors for the collective effort to see this tournament a complete success” Tugume noted.

The 2022 winner Peace Kabasweka did not take part in this year’s tournament.
