Uganda lost by 10 runs

The Cricket Cranes went down by 10 runs in their first ODI game on their tour of Qatar.

Uganda won the toss and elected to bowl first in the desert, a decision that didn’t pay quick dividends as Qatar got stuck losing their 1st wicket with 77 on the board.

On a wicket that had nothing in it for the bowlers, the medium pacers selected for the day Juma Miyagi and Riazat had little impact both picking no wicket and going for 124 runs in 20 overs.

The slow options of Alpesh Ramjani (4/38) and Henry Ssenyondo (2/13) dragged the game back in Uganda’s favour with some help from the leggies of captain Brian Masaba, Roger Mukasa and Kenneth Waiswa. The hosts finished on 250-9 in their 50 overs.

In response, the chase started poorly with the two left-handed openers Simon Ssesazi and Ronald Lutaaya falling for single-digit scores with one drop Roger Mukasa also not making too much contribution with the Cranes quickly reduced to 15/3.

The repair work was done by Ronak Patel (33) and Riazat Ali (84) who combined for 64 to get the chase going. Kenneth Waiswa came and went but a century partnership of 104 between Shah and Alpesh Ramjani (65) dragged Uganda back into the chase.

A series of run outs in the back end denied Uganda what looked like their victory as they fell short by 10 runs.

There were a lot of positives for Laurence Mahatlane and his boys especially the big partnerships with the bat from the middle order.

Cosmas Kyewuta, Frank Nsubuga and Pascal Murungi are the only guys not to get into the action today.

The Cricket Cranes take Friday off and return to action on Saturday.

Denis has represented Uganda in international cricket events including the World Cup. He is currently the captain of Wanderers Cricket Club.
