Manchester City forward Riyadh Mahrez scored the winning goals with two minutes left on the clock to hand Algeria a 2-1 win over Niger in the Group F qualifying match for the Afcon 2023.
The Desert Foxes had to come from behind as Niger took a surprise lead through Daniel Sosah in the 38th minute at the Nelson Mandela stadium.
The hosts equalised nine minutes after recess with an own goal from Alhassane Bonkano before Mahrez won the tie in the 88th minute.
Victory takes the 2019 African champions to nine points from as many available and could seal qualification if they beat Niger in Cotonou on March 27 when the two meet again.
Niger, despite defeat stay second on the table with two points, one better than both Tanzania and Uganda who face off in Ismailia on Friday.
Elsewhere, Tito Okello scored a late winner for South Sudan against Congo away from home, Gabon beat Sudan 1-0, and Ghana needed a late winner to edge Angola while Zambia beat Lesotho 3-1.
