Overview:
This year's Mount Rwenzori marathon will happen on 2nd September 2023.
The Mount Rwenzori marathon in Uganda has been classified among the 30 world’s best half marathons on the globe.
According to US outdoors wire, the Mount Rwenzori marathon is the only one rated in East Africa region and the African continent.
This half-marathon is on the foothills of Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains started just last year as a social enterprise to promote tourism to this remote region.
The snow-capped mountains are so close to the equator.


This year, the half-marathon will happen on 2nd September 2023.
The marathon traverses the areas of Kasese Municipality, Kilembe, Chanjojo, Mburakasaka, Kasanga, Muzogoti, Kirembe, Portal Road, Rwenzori Road, Kilembe Road and Rukidi III, among others.
Last year, 3000 participants graced the inaugural Mount Rwenzori Marathon that was sponsored by Tusker Lite, Rwenzori Mineral water, Rocket Health, Jumia, Standard Chartered Bank and United Nations Development Program (UNDP), among other partners and sponsors.
Allan Andiema (Uganda) clocked 2:31:49 to win the men’s 42 KM. The women category was won by Kenya’s Isgah Cheruto (2:50:58).
The half marathon was won by Gilbert Kamutwire (Uganda) with a time of 1:06:56 ahead of Leonard Kiprop (1:08:39) and Brian Adams Ategeka (1:09:56).
The women half marathon winner was Uganda’s Annet Chesang (1:21:29) as another Ugandan, Evas Nasasira came second with 1:26:20.

Often runners might prefer a remote run through the woods, savannah, thick forests, mountain terrain or a chance to admire a city’s architecture during the race.
