City Oilers recorded their seventh straight win in the 2023 National Basketball League, beating UCU Canons 87-64 at Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

However, the Canons were guilty of giving Oilers shooters confidence early on Friday night, and the champions rode that wave the entire game.

Titus Lual was on a shooting practice at the top of the mountain as he launched a bunch of uncontested 3-point shots as was the case for Michael Ngut and Luai Ruak. The trio combined for 61 points.

The opening quarter of the game did not only show Canons were going to compete in what was a high-tempo game but also that the university side was not willing to contest at the top.

The Canons (1-2) edged the opening ten minutes 18-17 but Oilers responded with a 30-point second quarter in which they shot 4-of-10 from downtown to open up a double-digit lead going into the long break.

UCU’s inability to guard the 3-point line continued into the second half of the game as Lual, Ngut and Ruak had the green light to fire up wide-open shots.

Nick Natuhereza’s charges trailed by 8 at the start of the fourth quarter but Tony Drileba, playing his first game of the season, pulled up for a trey that was followed by another from Lual to stretch Oilers’ lead to 14 points and the game was all but done.

Ruai finished with game-high 22 points, Lual had a 21 points and 15 rebounds double-double while Ngut contributed 18 points.

Forwards Peter Sifuma (13), Rogers Dauna (13) and point guard Jimmy Otim (12) scored in double digits for UCU.
