Matchday 7: Kwibuka Women’s Tournament

Game 8: Uganda W v Nigeria W

  • Uganda 72 all out
  • Nigeria 76/7
  • Nigeria won by 3 wickets

The Victoria Pearls’ unbeaten run at the Kwibuka tournament was ended by the Yellow Greens of Nigeria after defeating them by three wickets.

On the final day of the round-robin stage, Uganda won the toss and elected to bat first. However, they would rue this decision as they lost Kevin Awino on the second ball of the day and there was no coming back from that with only a 29-run partnership between Stephanie Nampiina (21) and Immaculate Nakisuyi (12) offering some resistance. Victoria Pearls laboured to 72/9 in their 20 overs.

The Nigerians were very mean with their bowling but were also helped by some poor batting from Uganda.

In the chase, Nigeria lost two wickets quickly at the top but Lucky Piety (25) and Salome Sunday (25 not out) put their foot down and survived the tricky overs before the former was run out.

The departure of Lucky Piet rocked the bat a bit but the result was never in doubt as the Nigerians made history by defeating Uganda for the first time in T20i.

The result didn’t matter so much considering the game was a dead rubber. Nigeria will play Kenya in the 3rd/4th playoff before Uganda takes on the hosts Rwanda in the final.
