The male and female national team badminton players being flagged off at Lugogo

Overview:

The team has eight players and two officials (coaches) as they vie for continental qualification for the World Badminton Championships which will be held in China in April, 2024.

The Uganda Badminton national male and female teams were officially flagged off for the Thomas and Uber championships due in Egypt (12th to 18th February).

This ten-man team was officially flagged off on Friday, 9th February 2024 at the National Council of Sports (NCS), Lugogo in Kampala.

The team has eight players and two officials (coaches) as they vie for continental qualification for the World Badminton Championships which will be held in China in April, 2024.

Whereas the ladies will play in play in the Uber cup, the men shall compete in the Thomas cup.

The men’s team will play three singles and two doubles as also in the ladies’ team and team to qualify for the World Badminton Championships, it needs three wins out of five.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by James Kasumba, a representative from National Council of Sports (NCS), Simon Mugabi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Uganda Badminton Association and Mohammed Rafi, chairman of the finance committee.

“Have confidence in the team, I know the worst will be silver”, Kasumba states.

Mugabi remarked that the team is in a good mood and expects medals only from them.

The traveling team comprises of Muzafaru Lubega, Amos Muyanja as men’s captain, Expendito Emmundu, Augustus Owiny in boys team.

The ladies’ team comprises of Gladys Mbabazi (captain), Tracy Naluwooza, Husina Kobugabe and Fadila Shamika Mohammed.

William Kabindi and Ivan Kalimunda will act as coaches.

” I have been training in Malaysia and am in good shape to bring back a gold medal”, Shamika vowed.
