Vipers head coach Livingstone Mbabazi was absent as his troops secured a 3-0 victory against regional side Iganga Young in the Uganda Cup at the round of 16 at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Wednesday.
Mbabazi’s situation at the Kitende-based side continues to create discussion however reports indicate he has not been anywhere close to Kitende since the one-all stalemate against Bright Stars last Thursday.
Mbabazi has been in charge of six Vipers games (four UPL and two Uganda Cup games). In the Uganda Cup, he has witnessed two wins and two stalemates which have been received as mediocre results.
And it’s only time that can tell if the relations between the gaffer and the club will be mended in time before their league duel against Wakiso Giants on Sunday.
Fumador Asiwome had a chance to give the hosts the lead in the fifth minute but he lost footing as he tried to meet Milton Karisa’s delivery.
Allan Okello tested the goalkeeper Joseph Wigan with a powerful effort but the custodian was equal to the challenge palming it away for a corner.
In the 25th minute, Karisa came close but his diving header off Mohamed Salem’s cross rattled off the frame before the rebound was cleared.
Ten minutes later, Asiwome was fouled in the forbidden area and Vipers were awarded a penalty that was calmly converted by Abdu Karim Watambala.
Five minutes into the second stanza, Salem doubled Viper’s’ advantage with a well-guided curler as he guided the ball into the right bottom corner.
With a minute to the hour mark, Okello came close as he witnessed his effort bounce off after going through a forest of legs.
In the 72nd minute, Fazil Tumwine opened his Vipers’ account with a simple tap-in off Watambala’s ground delivery.
At the end of the day, Vipers returned to winning ways after making two successive stalemates in the league.
