Algeria has booked a quarter final berth in the mixed doubles of Badminton at the expense of Uganda during the on-going 13th African Games in Ghana.
Saturday morning early contest at the Bortyman sports complex in Accra witnessed the Algerian duo of Mammeri K and Mammeri T.V win 2-0 over Uganda’s Husinah Kobugabe and Mustapha Lubega.
The Algerians were dominant in both sets of the fast paced game with good coverage of fore court and back yard.
The opening set witnessed Algeria win 21-10 with Mammeri T.V inflicting the biggest damage.
It was a done and dusted job in the subsequent set with the Algerians fighting for every shuttle on the court; winning 21-07.
“It was a tough match” Kobugabe confessed. “We staged a brave fight and we pick important lessons from match, facing very experienced players” she added.
Head coach William Kabindi was divided between another set of game involving Mauritius’ Paul G.J and Foo Kune K against the Ugandan opposition Expedito Emuddu playing alongside Tracy Naluwooza.
Mauritius won the contest 2-0 (21-13 and 21-11).
Kabindi believes the mixed doubles competition will prepare the players for the rest of the games in the competition during doubles.
“We gave our best in the mixed doubles. The challenge we got was inexperience at such a stage. The positives picked will help the players in the doubles’ events” Kabindi stated.
