Playing against home-based Uruguay. With a red card for the last four minutes. Uganda Men had their backs against the wall in the second match of the World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger 2024 in Montevideo.
However, with a cohesive effort by the team on defence and individual brilliance from Philip Wokorach on attack, they managed to win the match in the last play by 26-21 points.
Tries from Nobert Okeny and Wokorach gave Uganda a 14-00 lead in the first half but Uruguay levelled matters with three minutes to play. Uganda took the lead again through Timothy Kisiga before Uruguay equalised immediately after with twenty seconds on the clock.
Then Philip Wokorach did Philip Wokorach things and scored the match-winning try to send the Ugandan bench into wild celebrations.
Adrian Kasito received two yellow cards in the match and was sent off in the tenth minute. The first yellow card was for throwing the ball away after stepping into touch and the second was for a deliberate knock-forward in an attempted intercept.
This was Uganda’s second win out of two matches played on Day One; a sharp turnaround from the first round in Dubai where they lost both matches.
Uganda leads Pool C ahead of Germany, Uruguay, and Papua New Guinea in that order after Day One. They will play against Papua New Guinea in their final pool match on Day Two. This will be at 9.08 p.m. EAT on Saturday.
