Victoria Pearls are making it a habit of playing out low-scoring thrillers but this time they were on the wrong side of the result going down by four wickets to Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe needed four runs off the final over with Uganda’s skipper Consy Aweko with ball in hand. She gifted Zimbabwe two wides to bring down the equation to two runs off six balls from thereon Uganda needed a miracle to close out the win.
Lorrane Tshuman was able to find the gap to bring up the victory with two balls to spare and bring up back-to-back victories for Zimbabwe.
The victory for Zimbabwe puts them in charge of Group B and should finish as table leaders. The loss for Uganda means they will have work today against Rwanda on Sunday in their final group game.
Zimbabwe won the toss and asked Uganda to bat first. However, Uganda were their own enemy, batting in only one gear and kept losing wickets in succession without meaningful partnerships.
Immaculate Nakisuyi (17) and Rita Musamali (15) were the only stand-out batters for the Victoria Pearls who only managed 72 all out.
In the chase, Zimbabwe lost their first wicket with 35 runs on the board and from thereon Uganda started to crawl back into the game.
A good passage of play with the ball, especially from Immaculate Nakisuyi and Rita Musamali took the game deep for Uganda with 10 runs required off the final 12 balls.
Janet Mbabazi bowled the 19th over but once she conceded a boundary, that took some sting out of Uganda and eventually four runs in the final over were easy for Zimbabwe to find.
The teams take a break tomorrow with the action resuming on Sunday for the final group games.
