Team Uganda Badminton players had a field day on Friday, easing through their different games at the round of 32 to proceed to the next stage.
In the games played at the Borteyman Sports Complex, Multipurpose Hall, both the male and female badminton players from Uganda advanced with relative ease.
Men’s Doubles
Amos Mayanja teammed up with Muzafaru Lubega to overcome Burkina Faso’s pair of Abdou Faissal Kafando and Ousmane Ouedragogo in the men’s doubles.
Lubega and Mayanja will face Jean Bernard Bongout and Julien Paul Georges at the round of 16 on Saturday morning.
In the same category, Expedito Emuddu and Augustus Owinyi powered past the Ghanian pair of Ahmad Abdul Samad and Kelvin Alphous to set up a round of 16 date with Charles Carlos Ahouangassi and Oswald Ash Fano – Dosh from Benin.
Mixed Doubles category
Muzafaru Lubega and Husina Kobugabe edged Latifata Belem and Mahamadi Ouedragogo from Burkina Faso 2-0 at the round of 32 and will face Juliien Koceila and Tanina Violette from Algeria.
Expedito Emuddu and Justine Tracy Naluwooza earned a 2-0 win over Togo’s duo of Adjima Adjoa and Souleymann Abdoul-Koudousse.
Emuddu and Naluwooza will face Kune Kate Foo and Julien Paul Georges from Mauritius at the round of 16.
Gladys Mbabazi and Augustus Owinyi will face Nigeria’s Momon Nusa and Yakubu Ramatu on Saturday in the round of 16.
Women’s singles
All the four Ugandan female bandminton players will be in action at the round of 16 in the singles category.
Husina Kobugabe will face Algeria’s Yassmina Chibah. The former got a bye at the round of 64 before eliminating Zambia’s Matildah Kalandaya at the round of 32.
Justine Tracy Naluwooza will be up against Benin’s Flora Sessi Loise Kpogbemabou on Saturday.
Gladys Mirembe and Fadilah Shamika Mohamed Rafi will take on Ghana’s Rabiatu Ofoli and Cindy Tornyenyor respectively.
Women’s Doubles
Uganda’s Naluwooza and Shamika will face Gladys Akakpo and Flora Sessi Loise Kpogbemabou from Benin at the round of 16 on Saturday morning.
Kobugabe and Mbabazi will team up to take on KateJessica Lim and Kobita Dookhee from Mairitius.
It should be noted that the quartefinals of the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles will all be played on the same day (Saturday).
The semifinals and finals of all the aforementioned categories will come a day later.
