Cyclists on duty Credit: New Times

Overview:

Uganda has fielded different teams in football, cricket, badminton, table tennis, swimming, wrestling, athletics, judo, weightlifting, among others.

The Awashie Pokuase High Street in Accra city, Ghana will be specially reserved for cyclists on Sunday, 10th March 2024 for the 13th African Games cycling competition.

The cyclists will ride in a circuit which has a closed loop (for safety) with dual carriage for a distance of 14.9 kilometres; given a number of laps (to be confirmed by organizing team).

Uganda is among the countries that will take part in this competition and seeks excellent performance.

The team is led by skipper and vastly experienced Charles Kagimu.

Kagimu, an African champion from the 2023 Africa cycling championship at the same route will leads Uganda’s team that also has silver medalist Lawrence Lorot, Paul Lomuria and pro-rider Jordan Schleck Ssekanwagi.

Veteran coach Ssaka Bukenya is handling the entire team.

Cyclists in action

Team Uganda arrived in Ghana’s capital city, Accra a few days ago and have been going through the route.

“We are set to compete” Kagimu attested. “We have been practicing and the cyclists all have a clue about the circuit” he added.

A total distance of 163 kilometres will be covered in this road race. 59 km will be in the team race and 44 km in individual cluster.

The African Games are also an Olympic qualifier for many games; cycling inclusive.
