Semifinal: Uganda V South Africa | Match Summary

  • South Africa 122/4
  • Uganda 72 all out
  • South Africa won by 50 runs

Uganda failed to negotiate a tricky semifinal against South Africa at the Africa Games. Victoria Pearls won a good toss but a very poor performance saw them lose by a big 50 runs.

South Africa has struggled to negotiate chases and in hindsight maybe allowing them to chase a total would have been a good idea to put some pressure on their fragile batting lineup.

Victoria Pearls was very indifferent in the field giving away easy singles and missing half chances and eventually ended up giving away many runs. The only win was individual with Consy Aweko picking up her 100th wicket in WT20i something that isn’t a feat for an associate player.

South Africa managed to score 122 runs in their 20 over despite losing four wickets.

In the chase, Immaculate Nakisuyi who has stood out with the bat for Uganda went for cheap, Gloria Obukor and Esther Iloku tried to keep up with the scoring rate with some good running between the wickets but the boundaries were not coming that kept taking the rate up.

However, in the 8th Over, things unrivalled for Uganda losing three wickets for cheap and left railing at 33/4, from thereon the mountain became so high for the rest of the line-up.

Some lower-order hitting from Phiona Khulume made the score only respectable but in the end South Africa raised their level to earn a place in the final.

A place in the final guarantees them a medal against Zimbabwe who defeated Nigeria in the other semifinal.

Uganda has a day to reflect on an average performance before they take on Nigeria in the bronze contest on Wednesday morning.
