Uganda’s weightlifter Steven Ojedde competed in the 96 kg category during the 13th African Games held at the West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC) hall, University of Ghana in Accra city.

Although Ojedde was unable to finish among the top three positions in the snatch as well as clean and jerk competitions, he improved his personal record by 7 kilograms.

The Lira based weightlifter finished fifth in the snatch category having lifted 105 kg, 110 kg and 115 kg.

“I am happy to have competed among the finest weightlifters on the continent” Ojedde noted.

“Improving my total weights combined leaves with a smile but with a lot of work to do going forward” he added.

This category was won by Egypt’s Karim Ibrahim Abokahla with 151 kg. Algerian Faris Touairi came second for silver with 150 kg as Nigeria’s Desmond Akano lifted 145 kg, 150 kg and 150 kg in his three attempts.

For the clean and jerk competition, Ojedde improved to 152 kg, 152 kg (no lift) and 152 kg for the different attempts.

Like for the snatch event, the top three had Karim Ibrahim Abokahla (Egypt) with gold, Desmond Akano (Nigeria) bagging silver and Algerian Faris Touairi finishing third for bronze.

Meanwhile, the last weight-lifter for team Uganda, Aisha Namataka will be in action on Thursday.

Davis Niyiyota scooped three medals on the first day of weight-lifting in Ghana.

Lydia Nakidde lifted 65 kg, 70 kg and 70 kg during the different attempts for snatch to finish 6th overall during the championship won by Nigerian Ruth Imoleayo Ayodele (90 Kg, 93 Kg and 94 Kg).

Uganda has fielded athletes in Judo, wrestling, football, cricket, rugby, table tennis, badminton, swimming, handball, boxing athletics and chess.

There are demonstrations in pickleball, scrabble and mixed martial arts.

At the on-going 13th African games, Uganda has so far won gold in badminton (doubles women), silver (weightlifting and badminton) as well as bronze (swimming, weightlifting and badminton).

The swimming bronze was won by Anna Gloria Muzito in the 100m freestyle (ladies).
